i2i Upper Torso System

i2i Upper Torso System

The i2i system was developed by Leslie Fitzsimmons PT, ATP, who designed the i2i system for her most challenged students at Lakeview School in New Jersey. The i2i is designed to:

  • Maintain overall positioning goals. Counteracting gravity may result in better and longer-term hip and trunk positioning.
  • Decrease the progression of cervical deformities. Negative positions allowed to continue may become fixed deformities.
  • Supply an upright head position promoting eye contact. Looking at the floor or ceiling isolates an individual from their environment
  • Promote active head control. Adjusting the i2i in a “prompt” position allows the user to work on increased head control.
  • Improve a person’s mealtime experience. Meals become more manageable without the need for an aid to maintain an open airway
  • Improve saliva management. Upright head and neck positioning may result in decreased drooling.

i2i Overview

  • The unique, integrated shape of the i2i provides a maximal, proximal foundation between the head, neck, and shoulders. The suboccipital along with the integrated low profile occipital components provide posterior support and limit cervical extension while offering resting support.
  • The lateral components promote a midline head position and offer cervical supporting while maintaining range of motion.
  • Anterior stabilizer arms act as an anchor for the chin prompt, and provide an anterior boundary channeling movement into a midline position.
  • The chin prompt is designed to provide anterior support, to keep the head more midline for meals, and to encourage neck muscle strengthening. It is designed with a curved contact surface and straps that allow it to slide when an unsafe amount of force is exerted, therefore preventing airway obstruction.
  • For safety, the chin prompt should ONLY be used under a caregivers supervision, and is NOT to be used during transportation.

i2i Features

POSITIONING

  • The standard i2i creates an exoskeleton around the neck providing cervical support from the shoulders to the lower portion of the occipital.
  • The rear of the i2i provides support for the occipital and sub occipital regions.
  • Stabilizer arms provide an anterior boundary to combat slipping forward due to muscle fatigue or gravity.

COVER

  • Durable and abrasion resistant to withstand wear and tear.
  • Able to wipe clean and machine wash.
  • Can be removed and replaced.
  • Comes standard with Neoprene.
  • Cover can be modified with Glide Skin or Sheep Skin.

FOAM

  • Layered latex free closed cell rubber foam for support and comfort.
  • A complete range of foams, gels, and viscoelastic materials available.

MODIFICATIONS

  • Ear cutouts provide relief for sensitivity or easy access to the ears.
  • Adjustable arms adjust laterally, creating open space for the client or devices.
  • The low profile provides neck and shoulder support while keeping the occipital regions free.
  • Short arms free space on the clients chest while providing an anterior boundary to a lesser degree.
